Bringing the jazz funeral

tradition to Portland, OR

Services

  • The jazz funeral procession begins immediately after the formal memorial service or wake for the deceased. As mourners exit the service, they are joined by a brass band that plays music that starts off sad like “Nearer My God to Thee”. Family and friends cry during this somber march to the cemetery but once the deceased is buried, the band starts playing joyful jazz music to symbolize that the deceased has gone to a better place.

  • BASIC: $1500

The basic jazz funeral band requires six members, two drums and four horns. This fee reflects $250 per musician for 2 hours start to finish.

    MORE MUSICIANS: $250 a piece

We can add more horns, drums, clarinet, banjo, to make the event even more powerful.

  • The Grand Marshall leads the parade, providing a guide and solemnity to the march and queues the festivities that follow. We can provide a Grand Marshall for an additional $250, or we can provide a sash and train one of your attendees or family members to serve.

Expressing Grief and Loss Through Music

Few traditions of mourning leave room for true catharsis and celebration. The jazz funeral creates a transition for the living from pain and loss to joy and glory.
